Student and Departmental Use
Current MSU faculty, staff, and students are able to use Mathematica software at no additional cost. This is an annual license that expires August 9th, 2023. All licenses must be renewed at that time in order to continue use of the software.
Installation Information
Faculty and Departmental Use
The software can be downloaded directly from Mathematica.
- Purchase a license for Mathematica (annual renewal required) for $0.00 at techstore.msu.edu. Your receipt is your proof of license.
- If you are a new user, create a Wolfram account. To do this, go to http://user.wolfram.com and click “Create Account”.
- Fill out the form using your @msu.edu email address and then click “Create Wolfram ID”.
- Check your email and click the link to validate your Wolfram ID.
- Request the download and key at https://user.wolfram.com/portal/requestAK/d6412cfecacf8465d7641044b9961a4a1b66f511 - choose "Mathematica for Sites" for individual machines, or "Network Mathematica" for computer labs.
- Click the “Product Summary page” link to access your license.
- Click “Get Downloads” and select “Download” next to your platform.
- Run the installer on your machine and enter the Activation Key when prompted.
Student Use

- Run the installer on your machine and enter the Activation Key when prompted.
Version 12.0 Activations
To request a key for your software after the purchase of your licenses:
- Go to the Wolfram website.
- Fill out the form and be sure to include your full name, email address, version needed, type of configuration (single or managed license), and platform.
- You will be sent a key, via email, that will work for 15 days.
- The request will also be sent to the Site License Coordinator for approval.
- Once approved, your key will activate your software until August 9th, 2023.
Version 11.3 Renewals
If you are renewing an already active license, please follow the steps directly above for the version 11.3 activations. You will be able to input this new key after your current key expires on August 9th, 2022. Mathematica will prompt you for this when your license expires. Please contact the MSU Tech Store if you have any difficulties with this process.
Upgrades
Student Use
Upgrades will be provided as long as you have a current and valid license.
Departmental Use
If a new version is released, you may purchase a new media set as long as you have a current and valid license.
Home Use Provision
Student Use
One license provides an installation for one computer.
Departmental Use
Home use is permitted as long as you have purchased a license for use on campus.
To register for home use and to receive the home use media go to http://wolfram.com/siteinfo/homeuse/.
You will need to enter the MSU license number L2363-9590 and fill out the rest of the requested information.
Media
Student Use
Media is included with the license as a download.
Departmental Use
Media is included with the license as a download.
Media for home use is available for download or on CD when you register for this service.
If you are using a license server, you will need the License Manager software in addition to the installation software. Please contact the MSU Tech Store to request a copy.
